Preview: 71st Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (July 26, 2020) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 71st Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship at Florence Country Club in Florence, S.C. from July 28 - 30, 2020. (6,429 yards, par 34-36--70)

Players to watch:

 

• Daniel Brasington of Woodruff, S.C. enters the championship as the No. 1 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and will be looking to prove it at Florence Country Club this week. Brasington has finished in the top 10 in each of his last eight outings, including first place finishes at the SCJGA Morgan Lucas Championship and the GSA Junior Golf Tour Spring Swing Classic. In his most recent tournament, Brasington finished fourth at the SCJGA Blade Junior Classic. 

• Gene Zeigler of Florence, S.C. is the No. 2 player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and will be playing in his hometown this week at the 71st Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship. Zeigler won two high school events this spring before tournaments were canceled due to COVID-19. He is committed to play collegiate golf at the University of South Carolina after graduating from high school in 2021.

• Zach Adams of Charleston, S.C. is ranked No. 3 in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and has been playing some impressive golf this summer. After five top-10 finishes between August 2019 and the new year, Adams tied for second at the Future Masters tournament in Dothan, Ala. in June and finished tied for fifth at the South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship earlier this month.

• Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. is the No. 4 ranked player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings, the highest ranked of any player from the Tar Heel State. Among returnees from last year’s Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship field at River Landing, DeChellis boasts the highest finish, tying for fifth. After graduating from high school in 2021, DeChellis is committed to play collegiate golf at East Carolina University.

• Adam Hunt of Columbia, S.C. is a CGA champion already this summer, having won the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Championship by a margin of eight strokes. In the process, Hunt set a new scoring record for the event, finishing at 11-under-par, 133 total. Hunt is the No. 8 ranked player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings entering this event.

• Griffin Tarver of Tega Cay, S.C. is the final top-10 player in the Carolinas in the field for this week’s Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship coming in at No. 10 in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. Tarver won the Carolinas PGA Junior a month ago and also finished in the top-10 at the SCJGA Junior Championship as well as the Grant Bennett Florence Jr. Invitational.

 

Others notables in the field:

 

• Trey Crenshaw of Lancaster, S.C. is the No. 27 player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and recently won the South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship. He is committed to play collegiate golf at Coastal Carolina University after graduation in 2021.

• Mason Tucker of Lancaster, S.C. is the No. 19 player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings and a former CGA champion, having won the South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship in 2019. This year, he finished tied for fifth. Tucker is committed to play collegiate golf at the University of South Carolina after graduation in 2021.

• Charlie Barr of Salisbury, N.C. finished runner-up at the North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship, falling in 20 holes in the championship match. He played in the Carolinas Amateur Championship in early July and is the No. 43 ranked player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings.

• Kyle Kushnir of Raleigh, N.C. is the No. 26 player in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. Kushnir made the semifinals at the North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship in June and has top-10 finishes this summer at the TYGA Bojangles Junior Boys’ Open, the Pinehurst North & South Junior Qualifying and the Dogwood State Junior Boys’ Championship.

• Narayan Mohan of Charlotte, N.C. played in the Pinehurst North & South Junior Championship earlier this month and finished tied for third at the Dustin Johnson World Junior in earlier this year. He also has top-five finishes at the Tarheel Golf Foundation CCNC Junior Masters, the Pinehurst Donald Ross Junior and a Winternational Series Event.

 

Florence Country Club was founded in 1924. While the architect is unknown, the 18-hole course was built in the "Donald Ross" style, using the natural contours of the small 77-acre site. The club has had a very rich history of golf, tennis and social activities for 94 years. Florence Country Club has hosted many top amateur and professional golf tournaments over the years, including two USGA Championships conducted on site, the 1955 Girls Junior Championship and the 1963 Junior Amateur Championship.

 

The Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship crowns the best junior boys golfer in North and South Carolina. The championship format is stroke play, contested over 54 holes with a cut to the top 60 and ties after 36 holes.

 

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 18 and under as of July 30, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has a current USGA Handicap Index® that does not exceed 18.3.
