Alexsandra Lapple of Pinehurst, N.C. put herself in a position to succeed for the remainder of the week at the 16th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship with an opening round 69. She sits atop the leaderboard at 3-under-par.

“Today, I was really just focused on each shot,” Lapple said. “I hit my irons pretty close every time, so I didn’t have to worry about lag putting or anything like that. The greens were really soft, so you can stick them close and they’ll stop for you. Hitting all the irons close was a big difference to make my birdies. It was a nice and steady round today.”

Lapple started her day off strong with birdies on Nos. 1 and 4 before she made bogey on No. 5. She was quickly able to turn things back around with a birdie on No. 9 to finish the outward nine at 2-under-par.

Lapple played her last eight holes at 2-under-par with birdies on Nos. 11 and 13, which helped the Pinehurst, N.C. native finish her round atop the leaderboard, three strokes ahead of the next competitor.

Lapple said that she wants to keep a level head tomorrow and play a good, consistent round, and believes that finishing strong today will help her do so.

McKenzie Daffin of Fort Bragg, N.C. is in second place after an even-par, 72. She carded an eagle and three birdies today. Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. and Grace Ridenour of Raleigh, N.C. finished at 1-over-par, 73, while Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C. carded a 2-over par, 74.

The second round of the 16th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
