Reinke Seizes Largest Margin Win of the Day at SC Jr. Match Play

 

CONWAY, S.C. (July 8, 2020) --  Boys’ Round of 64, Girls’ Round of 16, and Boys’ Round of 32 match play results of the 2020 South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. on July 8, 2020. (Boys’ - 6,800 yards, par 36-36--72) (Girls’ - 5,600 yards, par 36-36--72)

Boys’ Round of 64 Results

 

The field is still stacked after the Round of 64 as the co-medalists and reigning champion are still in the mix and less than a fourth of the field saw the 18th green this morning.

 

Nolan Hawkins of Hilton Head Island, S.C., the No. 1 seed, finished the first match of the day 4 and 3 against James Potter of Florence, S.C. The other Stroke Play Qualifying medalist, Pake June of Florence, S.C. also won his match 2 and 1 against Benton Leinster of Greenville, S.C.

 

Mason Tucker of Lancaster, S.C. is the reigning champion and certainly played like it with a 6 and 4 win against Mason Kucia of Indian Land, S.C.

 

Tucker’s round however was not the biggest win of the morning. That came from Colt Ingram of Aiken, S.C. and Andrew Swanson of Bluffton, S.C. who both took down their opponents with impressive 7 and 6 finishes.

 

Ingram attributed his big win to his mental mindset. “I was swinging free. With today being match play, it helped relieve some pressure because you can only lose by one on a hole,” said Ingram. “I was just hitting fairways, hitting greens and giving myself opportunities on every hole and I walked away with birdies quite a few times.”

 

Ashton Eubanks of Lexington, S.C. pulled the largest match play bracket upset in the boys’ division. Eubanks is the 53rd seed and he took down Aiden Tugman of Six Mile, S.C., the No. 12 seed with a 2 and 1 finish. Overall in the Round of 64, eight out of 36 matches ended in an upset. Eubanks will face off against Aiken Golightly of Rock Hill, S.C. in the Round of 36.

 

Girls’ Round of 16 Results

 

Kayleigh Reinke of Rock Hill, S.C. won her match by the largest margin of the tournament thus far with an 8 and 6 finish against Jennifer Rials of Florence, S.C. 

 

“This morning I told myself, ‘Just hit the fairway,’ because it is a lot easier to make it from the fairway than it is to make it from the rough out here. Basically I was just hitting fairways and greens, trying to keep making par and sinking putts, “ Reinke said. 

 

Reinke had a “clutch” par save from 10 ft. on No. 5 to stay 3 up. “Then I just kept making par putts to put some pressure on her and was able to close it out early,” Reinke said. 

 

Reinke will face off against Emma Hunt of Lake City, S.C. in the Quarterfinals. Hunt won her match 4 and 3 against Adrienne O’Brien of Clemson, S.C. in the Round of 16. 

 

Ava Romfo of Charleston, S.C. pulled off the largest upset of the round finishing 4 and 3 against the No. 2 seed, Mia Gray of Conway, S.C. Romfo started off strong going 4 up through No. 9 then Gray won Nos. 12 and 13. However the last minute push was not enough to take Romfo down.

 

“On No. 15, I knew that I could close it out since I was 3 up going into it. I hit my 9-iron about five feet from the hole and knew that I had to make the putt for birdie to win. Then Mia hit short of the green, but chipped up right by the hole. That put the pressure on me to sink the putt and luckily I did, “ Romfo said.

 

The Girls’ Quarterfinal matches will begin at 8:30 tomorrow morning and eight girls will face off for four spots in the Semifinal matches that will be played in the afternoon. 

 

Boys’ Round of 32 Results

 

Due to two inclement weather play suspensions this afternoon, six groups were unable to finish their matches. Their current standings are listed below in the leaderboards. The players will pick back up where they left off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. The Girls’ Quarterfinals will begin at 8:30 a.m. and then the Boys’ Round of 16 will follow at 9:30 a.m.
