Atwood Retains No. 1 Seed at NC Junior Girls'

 

LENOIR, N.C. (June 18, 2020) -- Quarterfinals and Semifinals results of the 24th North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship at Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenoir, N.C. from June 17 - 19, 2020. (6,000 yards, par 36-36--72)

Quarterfinals Results:

 

No. 1 seed Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. has secured her spot in the Semifinals after defeating Leah Edwards of Greensboro, N.C., 3 and 2. This match was no easy feat for Atwood considering she did not get her first lead in the match until No. 13, which was won with a par. Atwood carded pars on Nos. 15 and 16 to close out Edwards and move on to the next round.

 

Atwood, the 2019 North Carolina Junior Girls’ Finalist, has battled in every match and will have to continue to battle weather and fierce competition if she wants redemption for last year. Atwood will square up against Kayla Dowell of Mebane, N.C. in the Semifinals. Dowell defeated Ella Perna of Durham, N.C. with a swift 4 and 3 finish.

 

Macy Pate of Boone, N.C. took Gracie Song of Waxhaw, N.C. into extra holes and defeated her after sinking a birdie putt on the 19th hole. Song, the youngest player in the competition at 12 years old, put up a fight and it shows on her scorecard. Song recorded an even-par, 72 with birdies on Nos. 3 and 15, but Pate ended their final four-hole tie stretch with a birdie to win the match.

 

Pate will face Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. in the Semifinals. Ketchum earned her Semifinals berth after defeating Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C., 4 and 3.

 

Semifinals Results:

 

Due to several inclement weather play suspensions today, both matches in the Semifinals were unable to finish. The Semifinals bracket is listed below. The players will pick back up where they left off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. After these rounds are finished, the Final Match will begin.
