Round One Results of the Carolinas Young Amateur

 

PINESHURST, N.C. (December 30, 2019) – Unusually high temps allowed for low scores in the first round of the 11th Carolinas Young Amateur Championship at Pinewild Country Club’s Magnolia Course.

In the Women’s Division, College of Charleston junior, Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C., takes the first round lead after being the only women in the field to shoot even par or better. Tindal got off to a hot start and found herself three-under-par after 10 holes. A couple bogeys on her closing two holes brought her back to even par for the Championship and left her a one-shot lead heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Hot on our leader’s heels is Florida State University junior, Kathleen Sumner of Mount Pleasant, S.C. Like Tindal, Sumner made four birdies in her first round but made one more bogey to finish at one-over-par (73). Tindal and Sumner have given themselves a significant cushion over their next closest competitors who sit at five-over-par (77); Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, N.C. and Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C.

In the Men’s Division, two golfers sit at the top of the leaderboard after round one including our defending champion and University of South Carolina senior, Caleb Proveaux of Lexington, S.C. Tied with Proveaux at three-under-par (69) is the 2019 Carolinian Amateur champion and Wake Forest University freshman, Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, N.C.

High Point University Sophomore, Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. is just one shot off the lead after an opening round score of two-under-par, 70.

The tournament format is 36 holes of stroke play for male and female amateur golfers ages 18 to 25 who have finished high school and have a current USGA handicap Index at a CGA member club. Trophies will be awarded to the top five spots in each division. Due to NCAA regulations, gift certificates will not be issued.
