Abigail Schimpf of Daniel Island, S.C. took the 63rd Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship by storm today, finishing the tournament at 12-under-par, 204. She broke the previous tournament record of 213 by nine strokes and edged out her nearest competitor by eight strokes.
Schimpf said, “I just tried to play my best game and I wasn’t paying attention to the score so I didn’t know that I had done that until I finished, but it is pretty cool.”
Schimpf started her round with an eagle on No. 2 from 92 yards out which just really started to fuel her fire. “My eagle was exciting, but it was just the second hole so I knew there was a lot of golf left and I needed to keep focusing. It was just another shot in my round,” said Schimpf.
This is Schimpf’s first Carolinas Golf Association championship and what a way to win it by breaking the tournament record and shooting 70, 66, and 68 in her three rounds. “I just did my best and it worked. I am happy that I was able to win this,” said Schimpf.
Sophie Holland of Cornelius, N.C. earned runner-up honors with a 4-under-par, 212 which also managed to beat the previous tournament record. Holland was tied for the low round today with an impressive 4-under-par, 68.
Alexia Siehl of Fort Mill, S.C. and Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. tied for third with matching even-par, 216 finishes. Rachel Rich of Mount Pleasant, S.C. earned fifth with a solid 2-over-par, 218 finish.
