Despite an inclement weather delay that stopped many of the afternoon groups from finishing their rounds yesterday, they have all now completed round 1 and their scores are in.
Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. is the leader after the first round with a 3-under-par, 69 finish. On the front nine DeChellis shot 1-over-par, but he flew through the back nine with four birdies to set himself atop the leaderboard.
“I wasn’t really playing my best in the beginning, but it turned out pretty good today,” said DeChellis. “I got off to a rough start and then I cooled off on the back nine and made some good par saves.”
According DeChellis, everything was just going in when it came to putting today and his scorecard certainly shows that. “I was just getting it up to five feet from the hole and just kept making four and five-footers so that was about it.”
With several players just behind him at the top of the leaderboard, DeChellis is simply looking to continue playing well and “just not get ahead of myself and just put it in play.”
In second place there is a three-way-tie just one stroke behind the leader between Matias La Grutta of Cary, N.C., Jake Herring of Wilson, N.C. and Todd Moyer of Cornelius, N.C. All three of them carded 2-under-par, 70s in the first round.
There is yet another large tie on the leaderboard and that would be for fifth between Jake Newman of Charlotte, N.C., Ben Morehead of Charlotte, N.C., Pierce Robinson of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Mason Tucker of Lancaster, S.C. These four players all turned in 1-under-par, 71 scores to carry them into round 2 in the top 10.
The leaderboard is tight at the top with an incredibly strong field this week, so at this point it is anyone’s game. Stay tuned to our Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to keep up with live updates from today’s round 2 action.
