Mathews Maintains the Lead at Dogwood Girls'

CLEMMONS, N.C. (July 10, 2019) -- Round two results of the 15th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship at Salem Glen Golf & Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. on Wednesday, July 10, 2019. (5,856 yards, Par 36-35--71)

Round one leader Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. took it up a notch with a second round score of five-under-par, 66. Mathews opened her round slower than usual with some steady pars but sunk her first birdie of the day on the par-5, fourth hole.

“From the start, I started off pretty slow, slower than yesterday; a few pars about three I think. I stuck it close a few times after and dropped some putts,” said Mathews.

Mathews got the momentum going at the end of the front nine rolling in a couple 30 foot putts for birdie; making the turn at three-under-par, 33. She stumbled a little on No. 10 with an unsuccessful up and down attempt giving her the first and only bogey of the day. Mathews confidently recovered with three birdies on the back nine and rolled in a 20 foot putt for her final birdie on the par-3, 17th hole.

Matthews was not the only player under par today. Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. climbed up the leaderboard with a round two score of four-under-par, 67. 

“I kept making pars and finally the birdies started dropping. Today shows that I can shoot low when I am focused,” said Fobes.

Jaclyn Kenzel of Southern Pines, N.C. is in third position behind Fobes with a round two score of one-over-par, 72.

Thursday’s final round will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
