Edwards Claims 23rd NC Junior Boys' 13-Under

Quarterfinals

Max Martin of Pinehurst, N.C. managed to take down the stroke play medalist, Robby Thompson of Charlotte, N.C. 1 up with a clutch putt on the final0 hole. Martin finished his match with an exclamatory “Let’s go!” to let everyone know he would be heading into the semifinals.

Mack Edwards of Charlotte, N.C. won his quarterfinal match against Rich Wills of Cramerton, N.C. in 11 holes. Edwards is the highest seed left in the tournament and he was also a part of the only quarterfinal match to go into extra holes.

Will Spicer of Kings Mountain, N.C. won his match 1 up against Preston Howe of Winston-Salem, N.C.with  a 20-foot putt from off the green on the final hole. Spicer, the defending champion will continue his path to a repeat championship in the semifinals against Edwards.

Ethan Paschal of Fayetteville, N.C. defeated Aston Lee of Charlotte, N.C. 3 and 2 in their quarterfinal match. He will continue on to the semifinals and face off against Martin for a spot in the championship match.

 

Semifinals

Mack Edwards of Charlotte, N.C. has defeated the defending champion, Will Spicer of Kings Mountain, N.C. with an impressive 4 and 2 finish. Edwards is the 14th seed and will be moving on to the championship match against Max Martin of Pinehurst, N.C.

Martin earned his position in the championship match after a win in 11 holes against Ethan Paschal of Fayetteville, N.C. This match was a horse-race until Martin finally pulled ahead on the 11th hole.

 

Championship Match

Mack Edwards of Charlotte, N.C. defeated Max Martin of Pinehurst, N.C. 3 and 2 in the championship match and claimed the title of 23rd NC Junior Boys’ 13-Under Champion.

“It is truly hard to say it in words,” said Edwards. “It feels great to win this championship. I can’t even describe how awesome it is.”

Edwards got off to a hot start during the championship match, winning No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4. He kept this momentum up, only losing one hole on the front nine and making the turn at 3 up. Martin was able to win both No. 11 and No. 12, which Edwards attributes to Martin’s great play and his own “high confidence”.

“My confidence was high up there,” said Edwards. “It was like that feeling when you make a couple of birdies in stroke play and you get a little too high up there and it is really easy to lose it from there. You kind of slack off a little bit and I think that is what I struggled from, but it put it all into perspective and I was able to play my own game from there.”

Playing his own game is exactly what Edwards did from there as he won No. 14 and No. 16 to win the championship match and take home the trophy. This is Mack Edwards first CGA championship and he hopes to win his next later this summer.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
