Fulton Smith Fires 11-Under, 61 in First Round of Carolinian Am

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (May 17, 2019) -- First round results of the 4th Carolinian Amateur Championship at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek, N.C. on Friday, May 17, 2019.

Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, N.C. made a barrage of birdies to tie Keith Hills Golf Club’s competitive course record shooting 11-under-par, 61 in the first round of the 4^th Carolinian Amateur Championship. Smith made seven birdies on the front nine alone to shoot 7-under, 29.

“I felt like I was going to play well but definitely not 61,” Smith said. “I have been struggling the last few years and over the last few months I have made some progress. I felt confident going into today. Today was one of those days where the cup felt five feet wide so I was making everything.”

Smith will hold a five-shot lead over his closest competitors going into round two.

Trey Capps of Garner, N.C. was the early leader from Friday’s morning wave. Capps made seven birdies in a row starting on his fourth hole to finish the day with a 6-under-par, 66.

“Today there were some tricky pins,” Capps said. “Putting is definitely the key to shooting well here. You can't overpower the course. Just make putts and miss it in the right places on some of these pins.”

Brett McLamb of Coats, N.C. finished round one tied with Capps for second place with a 6-under-par, 66.

Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville, N.C. shot a strong 4-under-par, 68 in the opening round and now sits alone in fourth place entering round two.

Defending champion, Harry Reynolds of Greenville, S.C. had a solid start to his title defense. A 3-under-par, 69 puts him in fifth place heading into round two.

“I just have to keep giving myself a chance for something good to happen,” Reynolds said. “When you really try to force it, knowing how well I played last year, it can put some pressure on yourself. If you just keep giving yourself a chance like I did last year, a lot of good things can happen.”

The field will be reduced to the low 70 golfers and ties after tomorrow's round.
