Milligan/Fettes Lead in Camden
Ricky Milligan drains it on #10
Camden Country Club was bombarded with birdies today for the first round of the 68th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship as 34 teams shot under par. The leaders, Ricky Milligan of Shelby, N.C. and Shaun Fettes of Charlotte, N.C., combined for seven birdies and no bogies to shoot an opening round seven-under-par, 63.
"We just stayed in the right spots. This course can get very tricky quick if you are not careful," said Milligan who had four birdies of his own.
The duo takes a one-shot lead into the second round of qualifying and will look to capture the Joe B. McCarley Cup which is awarded to the medalist team. Earning the number one seed would be helpful but the team is focused on staying on track to make match play.
"Tomorrow we will plan to do the same; keep it in the fairways and avoid the bad areas and make it to match play," added Milligan.
Three teams are tied for second at six-under par, 64. Cordes Ford of Georgetown, S.C., the 1996 Carolinas Amateur Champion, and his teammate Rion Moore of Charleston, S.C. used six birdies and no bogies en route to their 64. Jordan Sease of Piedmont, S.C. and Weston Bell of Lexington, S.C. utilized four birdies by Sease and an eagle by Bell on hole 7 for their stellar round. Two-time Carolinas Four-Ball champion, Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington, of N.C and teammate, defending N.C. Four-Ball Champion, Dustin Moore of Burlington, N.C., got off to a good start with five birdies and an eagle to get to six-under.
