Mia Gray of Conway, S.C. stole the show in the first round of the Carolinas Girls' 15 and Under Championship at Country Club of Whispering Pines on Monday, July 9, 2018. She carded a three-under-par 69 in the opening round to give herself an eight stroke lead over the rest of the field.
A rocky start for the thirteen-year-old, Gray bogeyed three of her first four holes. However, she steadied herself, put her foot on the gas and never looked back. She followed her three bogeys with three consecutive birdies on the front nine. After the turn, she remained consistent and earned three birdies and no bogeys.
Lauren Martin of Mooresville, N.C. and Molly Hardwick of Lexington, S.C. are tied for the second position eight strokes behind Gray, after carding a five-over-par 77. Martin, who has three top-10 finishes so far in 2018, capped off her first day of competition with one birdie. Hardwick finished strong on the back nine with one birdie and only one bogey.
Macie Burcham of Greensboro, N.C., Mary Kathryn Talledo of Spartanburg, S.C. and Grayson Warren of Washington, N.C. are in a three-way tie for fourth position headed into the second and final round of play after carding a six-over-par 78 in the first round.
