Battling continuous rain showers throughout her round, Abigail Schimpf of Daniel Island, S.C. remained steady. She carded a one-under-par 71 in the second round of the Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship to take the lead headed into the final day of play.
The rain began before Schimpf teed off, but she was not phased by the conditions. She birdied two of her first six holes before play was suspended due to rain. After returning to the course when the delay was over, Schimpf stumbled a bit and double bogeyed her next hole. She said she reminded herself that everyone in the field was facing the same difficult conditions, and she was able to pull it together on the back nine and record no bogeys and two birdies.
"I made a lot of putts inside six or seven feet," Schimpf said. "I kept my shots in the fairway for the most part, which really helped."
Two strokes behind Schimpf is Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. The rising high school sophomore carded the only other score in red numbers in the second round. A strong start to her round, she had three birdies and no bogeys on the front nine. Finishing her round under a continuous drizzling rain and a big smile on her face, she finished at one-under-par 72 for the day and is two-over-par for the tournament.
"It was beautiful weather, I loved it," Schuster said. "It reminded me of home, and I think it evened out the field."
Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. and Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. are tied for the third position at three-over-par. Atwood struggled a bit on the front nine, but finished strong with no bogeys and two birdies on the back nine. Sudjianto remains near the top of the leader board after finishing in red numbers in the opening round and carded a four-over-par 76 in the second round.
The format for this tournament is 54 holes of stroke play competition.
