In her last summer of junior girls' golf, Hailey Joy of Reidsville, N.C. is determined to make her mark. In the first round of the 62nd Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship at Croasdaile Country Club, she carded a two-under-par 70 and holds a one stroke lead over the rest of the field.
The rising freshman at the University of North Carolina Greensboro had a great start to her round with a birdie on the first hole. She was able to carry that momentum with her throughout the round and finished with five birdies. She credited her round to her ability to close out the holes once she was on the green.
"My putting was the best part of my game," Joy said. "I think I had about 28 putts today, and pretty much made anything inside of 15 feet I made, so it really made a big difference."
With two days left of play, Joy is hoping to maintain her lead in order to win her first CGA title since the 2015 Carolinas Girls' 15 & Under Championship. She said she is not focusing on being the leader but is trying to keep it out of her mind as much as possible. Instead, she is concentrating on implementing her game plan for the rest of the week. "I'm looking forward to competing and making as many putts as I can," Joy said.
Joy was one of only three players in the field to be in red numbers after the first round. Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. and Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. finished right on Joy's heels with a one-under-par 71. Sudjianto, who was the finalist at the North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship two weeks ago, carded three birdies in her round. Consistent through her round as well, Dunlap had an impressive back nine with no bogeys and two birdies. Two shots behind, Abigail Schimpf of Daniel Island, S.C., Megan Kanaby of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. are tied for fourth with a one-over-par 73.
The format for this tournament is 54 holes of stroke play competition.
