Anna Redding of Concord, N.C. leads after the first round of the 92nd Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship, carding a 5-under-par 67 at Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, S.C.
Consistency was the ticket for Redding, who is a rising senior at the University of Virginia, and she made three birdies on both the front and back nine and only recorded one bogey the entire round.
She contributed her solid round to her ability to keep her ball in the fairway and out of the rough, which is thicker than usual due to the amount of rain that hit the club the week prior to the tournament. Her driving accuracy combined with sinking putts created a perfect combination for success.
"My putting was really solid today," Redding said. "I had less than 30 putts today, which has been a goal for me this spring, so it was awesome to achieve that."
With two days left of tournament play ahead of her, Redding has created a solid gap between herself and much of the rest of the field. Redding said having a round under her belt makes her feel more prepared heading into the upcoming rounds, and being the leader makes her more confident after her "first sub-70 round in awhile."
Kate Hill of Clemson, S.C. is right on Redding's heels after round one, finishing one shot behind the leader. Hill, who is a rising junior at Anderson University in South Carolina, carded three birdies on the front nine to record a 3-under score for the day.
Redding and Hill are two of the five players in the field of 105 players to shoot even par or better in the opening round. 2016 champion Ashley Sloup of Southport, N.C., Reona Hirai of Summerville, S.C. and 2017 runner-up Victoria Huskey of Greenville, S.C. all sit at one-under headed into the second day of play.
The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to play in the Championship Division (approximately 6,100 yards) or the Carolinas Division (approximately 5,200 yards).
Overall champion will be determined from contestants playing in the Championship Division. Awards will also be given for the low senior in the Championship and Carolinas divisions (ages 50-64) and the low Super Senior in the Carolinas division (ages 65 and over).
Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by June 3, 2018, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club.
Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter account, @cgagolf1909. Continue to visit the CGA website throughout this championship and all year long for complete championship coverage including scores, interviews, photos, and recaps.
