Top Players Competing at 9th Jimmy Anderson Girls'

Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. is ranked third in the state

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (October 4, 2017) -- The 2017 Carolinas Golf Association’s girls’ championship season wraps up with the 9th Jimmy Anderson Junior Girls’ Invitational at Jacksonville Country Club in Jacksonville, N.C. on October 7-8 (approx. 5,800 yards, par 72). A record 61 girls are scheduled to play in the 36-hole stroke play tournament for junior girls between the ages of 12-18 who have not completed high school. Three players from outside the Carolinas are in this year's field. The Carolinas Golf Association and the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour (PKB Girls') will conduct the event in conjunction with Jacksonville Country Club.

Jacksonville Country Club Board of Directors and several of the club’s junior golf program alumni of the club started the tournament in 2009 to honor Mr. Jimmy Anderson for his service as golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club and his dedication and support of junior golf. Jimmy Anderson was the head golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club for over 25 years. Each Saturday morning, he conducted a junior golf clinic to help spread the game of golf to the next generation. During his tenure at Jacksonville CC, he taught many juniors including Mallory Miller, the 1987 N.C. Junior Champion and numerous future collegiate and golf professionals. Not only did he teach the game of golf, but was always there with a helpful word of encouragement to any young golfer.

Here are some of the top ranked Carolinas players (as of 10/1/17) at this year’s event:

• Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. A high school senior, Hawkins has committed to playing collegiately at Campbell University. In August, she captured the Trusted Choice Big "I" National Championship. In 2016, she won two Carolinas Golf Association major junior championships. She is ranked #3 in N.C. among junior girls.

• Hailey Joy of Reidsville, N.C. A high school senior, Joy will attend UNC-Greensboro in the fall. This summer she won the Dan Dobson Junior and tallied top 10 finishes at the North Carolina Junior Girls' and Twin State Junior Girls' championships. Joy is ranked #6 in N.C.

• Jensen Castle of West Columbia, S.C. A high school junior, Castle is ranked #4 in S.C. This year she claimed victories at the Harvey Brock - Orange Jack, Cobb's Glen Junior and earned medalist honors at her U.S. Junior Girls' qualifier.

• Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, N.C. A high school sophomore, some of Adam's top finishes this summer include T5 at the North Carolina Junior Girls', T14 at the North & South Junior Girls', 15th at the Carolinas Girls', and T6 at the PKB Girls' Open Championship. Adam is ranked #7 in N.C.

• Madison Isaacson of Greensboro, N.C. A high school senior, Isaacson is ranked #8 in N.C. She will play at James Madison in the fall. Last month, she won the Bryan Invitational/Guilford County girls golf championship. This year she has also won two PKB Girls' events and two Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) tournaments.

• Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. A high school freshman, Schuster has shot up the rankings to #9 in N.C. This summer, Schuster earned wins at American Junior Golf Association and Hurricane Junior Golf Tour events and finished T6 at the Carolinas Women's Amateur.

• Anna McDonald of Hickory, N.C. A high school junior, McDonald is ranked #12 in N.C. In 2015, she shared the Jimmy Anderson Girls' title with Jennifer Chang at a rain-shortened tournament. This summer McDonald won two TYGA One-Day events and the PKB Girls' Southeast Series Finale at Cobb's Glen.

• Haeley Wotnosky of Wake Forest, N.C. A high school senior, Wotnosky will play at the University of Virginia in the fall. Last month, Wotnosky won the TYGA State Championship. Earlier in the summer, she placed second at the Joe Cheves Junior and earned a couple of top-five finishes at American Junior Golf Association events. She is ranked #15 in N.C.

The Jimmy Anderson Junior Girls’ Invitational is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play. Entry is open to any female amateur golfer 12 to 18 years of age as of October 8, 2017, who has not started college (class of 2017 and higher) and who has a current USGA handicap.

All but one past champion has played Division I collegiate golf including Tatum Briele of New Bern, N.C. (NC State), Sarah Bae of Pinehurst, N.C. (NC State), Evelyn Dole of Raleigh, N.C. (Southern Methodist), Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, N.C. (Elon). Jennifer Chang of Cary, N.C. won the Anderson Girls’ Invitational three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016 and has committed to play at Southern California. Last year's champion, Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, N.C. is playing at Georgia Southern University.

About the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Tour (PKBGT)

The PKBGT is an initiative of the non-profit Triad Youth Golf Foundation. The Foundation will provide financial and logistical support to the Tour and work with community and regional leaders to promote girls golf in the Carolina’s. The mission of T.Y.G.F. is to provide cost-conscious access to golf with a specific focus on girl’s golf development through the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf programs of Greensboro & Winston-Salem.

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
