Burgess Makes History at Carolinas Junior Girls'

Burgess was the only golfer to finish in red numbers

FLORENCE, S.C. (August 3, 2017) -- Final results of the 61st Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship hosted by the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. on Thursday, August 3rd (6,006 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating 74.2/121).

Gracyn Burgess of Lexington, S.C. made history in the final round of the Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship on Thursday at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. She became the first junior girls' golfer in Carolinas history to win the Carolinas Junior Girls', Twin States Junior Girls', and Vicki DiSantis Girls Championships in the same year. Burgess also became just the fifth player in Carolinas golf history to win the Carolinas Junior Girls' and Twin States Junior Girls' in the same year, the first since 1994 when Jenny Jones completed the feat. "I never pictured my summer going like this," said Burgess as she hoisted the Majorie Burns trophy. "I am so excited to be able to win this tournament. I cannot thank my family and God enough."

Burgess, a Clemson University commit, was the only golfer to finish the three-day championship in red numbers, in part because of her round yesterday. "My bogey free round yesterday gave the momentum coming into today. I started really good today and was two-under at the turn. From there I just put it on cruise control." Burgess overcame a four-way tie heading into the final day of competition, two of which were her Mid-Atlantic teammates Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. and Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., who joined her in the lead group. "It was so much fun to compete against such great friends. Even though we are competing against each other, we still have a great time."

Tindal and Elle Johnson of Inman, S.C. finished tied for second and four shots back of Burgess at one-over, 217 overall.

The CGA  would like to thank the members and staff of the Country Club of South Carolina for hosting the Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship. A special gratitude is extended to PGA professional Jim Cain, director of golf Steve Prueter, course superintendent Bo Cooper, and food and beverage director Loice Agutu.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has not reached her 19th birthday by August 3, 2017, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® of 18.3 or lower at a CGA member club.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
