Paul Simson of Raleigh shot the day's lowest score of seven-under 64. "It's one of those perfect days," said Simson. "With 64 you don't ever complain." Interview
Simson has won this championship eight times by continuing to craft his game. "A championship of any state is a big deal, I get keyed up for it and have been working hard to make sure that I felt pretty good coming in... and I do."
Simson's round was highlighted on the par-4 fourth hole, where he made an eagle by hitting a 7-iron into the hole from 156 yards. After switching to a different putter just prior to today's round, Simson rolled in six birdie putts against just one bogey.
The only other player in red numbers on the par-71 layout, Macon Moye of Pinehurst, shot 2-under. While Moye has won two CGA mid-amateur titles, he is searching for his first win on the CGA senior circuit.
Following Wednesday's round the field of 118 players will be cut to the low 60 and ties for Thursday's finale.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
