CAMDEN, S.C. – Quarterfinal and Semifinal match play results of the 66th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship hosted by Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 (6455 yards, par 35-35—70, 71.6/128).
The top four seeds in match play all advanced to the semifinals of the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship Saturday morning. 1-seed and stroke play medalists Paul Tucker and Brent Roof defeated Daniel Neveu and Sherrill Britt, 1-up. 2-seed Ryan Marter/Jack Parrott dispatched the father-son team Neil Harrell/Logan Harrell, 5&3. 3-seed Michael Childress/Lansdon Robbins defeated Chris Mitchell/Matthew Laydon, 2&1. 4-seed Justin Hood/Jake McBride won their match over Matt Carter/Weston Bell, 3&1.
In the first semifinal match, mid-amateur golfers Paul Tucker/Brent Roof matched up with North Carolina State teammates Justin Hood/Jake McBride. Hood/McBride took a 1-up lead they would never relinquish with a birdie on the third hole and stretched their lead to 2-up with a birdie on the eighth hole. Tucker/Roof could not muster a charge as numerous makeable birdie putts went begging on the back-nine. Another birdie at the thirteenth gave the college golfers a 3-up lead. Reaching the short par-4 fifteenth with driver, Justin Hood made eagle to close out the match 4&3. “We feel really comfortable on the back-nine here, even though it’s the harder side”, said McBride. They have won 12 holes on the back nine while only losing 3 holes on that side over their four matches.
In the second semifinal match, junior golfers faced off as AC Flora High School teammates Ryan Marter/Jack Parrott defeated Cannon School golfers Michael Childress/Lansdon Robbins, 4&3. This match had a similar feel for Marter/Parrott as they took the lead on the first hole and never looked back. Throughout four match play rounds, the three-time South Carolina Junior Golf Association Four-Ball champions have only lost three holes and immediately won the next each time. They have closed out each match early and have yet to play holes 16-18 in match play, but as Parrot said, “anything can happen in match play, especially the championship, we’re just happy to be here.”
The Championship Match tees off at 8:00am at Camden Country Club on Sunday morning.
