The last time the Carolinas Mid-Amateur was held at Providence Country Club, Walter Todd, Sr. won the title. Ten years later, Walter's nephew, 30-year-old Thomas Todd, III, holds the 36-hole lead. The two Todds, both of Laurens, S.C., teamed together in 2009 to win the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship.
In breezy conditions Saturday, just five players were able to break par in the second round of the 37th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship at Providence Country Club. The day's low round, and top spot on the leaderboard, belong to Thomas Todd, III of Laurens, S.C. Todd followed his opening round 69 with a stellar four-under 68. With a two-day total of 137, Todd takes a five shot lead into Sunday's final round. In each of the first two days, Todd made birdied holes 8, 9, & 10.
One of the longer hitters in the field, Todd is five-under on the five par-5s at Providence Country Club. "Driver is one of my greatest strengths," said Todd, who at age 30 is playing in his first Carolinas Mid-Am. "But I told myself I felt like I could play this layout and it setup well for me."
Robert Lutomski of Simpsonville, S.C. and two-time North Carolinas Mid-Am champion Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro are tied for second at two-under 142.
First round leader John Heffernan of Charlotte, N.C. stumbled in the windy conditions Saturday afternoon. His second round 79 drops him to T17.
The field was cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Sixty players made the cut at 10-over 154. Just six players are below even-par 144 thru 36 holes.
With a storm expected to arrive to the Charlotte area Sunday afternoon, the final round will begin with an 8:30am shotgun start.
