Pat Brogden is the only player in the history of the Carolinas Senior Women's Amateur to earn back-to-back victories. After a first round two-over-par 74, Brogden, a Garner, N.C. native, has a share of the lead and her eye on hoisting that trophy for a third-straight year. If Brogden can outlast her competitors, this would be her sixth Carolinas Senior Women's title.
Hot on Brogden's heels is Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. Briele is looking for her first CGA win since the 2015 North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur. Both Brogden and Briele are in the Top-Five of the Carolinas Senior Women's rankings and were teammates on the Carolinas squad at the Carolinas-Virginias Women's Team Matches this past summer.
Brogden had a very steady day, finishing 1-over-par on each side. She finished with 15 pars, 1 birdie, 1 bogey and one double-bogey on the Par-4 18th. Briele's two-over 74 was quite different. The New Bern native finished with four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes. Much like Brogden, Briele double-bogeyed the final hole of the day. Brogden and Briele will be paired together for the final round on Wednesday, along with 18-time CGA champion Patty Moore, who is three-strokes behind the leaders. Moore is a seven-time champion of this event and is tied for third place with South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame member and past champion (2003) Karen Ferree of Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Brenda Frye of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. carded a 9-over-par 81 and is in the lead for the Low Super Senior award in the Carolinas Division. The award is given to the lowest scorer in the Carolinas Division (shorter course) who is over the age of 65.
Play will resume for the final round Wednesday morning with a 9:00 shotgun start.
The championship is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to to compete in the Championship Division or the Carolinas Division, which plays a shorter course.
Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday by September 27, 2016, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing at a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.
