Grace Yatawara of Salisbury walked 106 holes this week, but it was all worth it in winning the 18th NC Junior Girls’ Championship at Starmount Forest CC in Greensboro, NC. Yatawara, a rising high school junior, defeated Siranon Shoomee of Sanford 3 and 2 in the championship match. Yatawara took a one up lead after the third hole and a birdie on the fourth hole extended her lead to two up. Shoomee then won the next two holes to square the match through six holes. The two finalists halved the next four holes, but Yatawara won holes 10 and 11 to take a two up lead. Yatawara extended the lead to three up, but Shoomee birdied the fourteenth hole and Yatawara was two up with four holes to go. Yatawara won the fifteenth hole with a par and moved to three up through 15. Both players tied sixteen and Yatawara won the match and secured the title at the NC Junior Girls’ Champion for 2014.
Both players survived an 18-hole qualifying on Tuesday, then two matches on Wednesday and two matches on Thursday to reach Friday’s championship match.
This annual junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
