Wieler Runs Away With Carolinas Junior Boys'

 

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (July 1, 2022) -- Final Round results from the 73rd Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship at Columbia Country Club, in Blythewood, S.C. on July 1, 2022. The field competed at 7,039 yards (36-36--72).

It is not rare at a golf tournament that the leader going into the final round wins. However, what Jack Wieler of Waxhaw, N.C. did today was something special. The Elon commit posted a bogey-free round of 8-under, 64 to run to finish the tournament at 16-under-par, 200. When it was all said and done Wieler won the championship by a whopping ten shots.

“This round is my second best stroke wise but it's the most special, because I won,” Wieler said. “I had never won before with a clubhouse lead, so it was nice to win one.”

The win marked Wieler’s first Carolinas Golf Association win of his career. It could not have come at a better time, considering this event is the biggest of the junior boys calendar.

In his final round, Wieler did not allow anyone else in the field feel like they had any chance of taking the lead from him. Coming into the round with a one-shot lead, Wieler knew he had to stay aggressive if he wanted to take the title.

To get his round jump started, Wieler had a tap-in birdie on No. 3 which is the first par-5 at Columbia Country Club. The next two holes, Wieler’s putter got hot. He drained birdie putts on consecutive holes, both being over 20 feet. This extended his lead to three shots at the time.

Taking advantage of his length off the tee with his driver, Wieler birdied the other par-5 on the front nine, No. 7. The next hole, the par-3 eighth, Wieler missed the green left and gave his opponents what they thought was a slim opening to get a shot back. The No. 1 ranked junior golfer in N.C. had other plans, as he chipped in for birdie, his fifth on the opening nine.

“I walked up there and it was sitting up on a nice piece of grass, and I told my caddie it looks pretty makeable,” Wieler said. “I hit the chip a little too hard, but it hit the back of the flagstick which I was grateful for.”

Wieler did not let up on the back nine, making birdies on Nos. 11 and 12. After back-to-back pars on Nos. 13 and 14 an inclement weather delay paused the tournament for an hour. After the break, Wieler, who was in full control of the tournament, added one more birdie on No. 15 that put him at 8-under for the day.

“Luckily my caddy Ryan Dunn kept me easy-going during the break,” Wieler said. “When we restarted, I was focused just on my round at hand and not the bigger picture.”

In his opening round of the tournament, Wieler shot 3-under, 69 which put him in the mix. A second round 5-under, 67 gave him a one shot lead going into the final round. This was a lead that Wieler never gave up the entirety of the final 18 holes.

“Winning a CGA championship was my first goal for this summer,” Wieler said. “It’s definitely good to get this monkey off my back. I’m excited about it.”

Miles Eubanks of Warrenville, S.C. earned runner-up at 6-under-par, 210. His best round of the tournament was a 5-under, 67 in the second round. Carson Bertagnole of Pinehurst, N.C. earned solo third at 5-under-par, 211. Bertagnole was the opening round leader and is also the reigning HV3 Invitational Champion.
