Top-ranked women golfers to compete at Cowan's Ford Golf Club

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 18th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship at Cowan's Ford Golf Club in Stanley, NC on July 7-9.

This is the tenth consecutive year Cowan's Ford Golf Club has hosted the Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship. Built in 1963, Cowan’s Ford Golf Club is one of the top private, member-owned golf clubs in the Lake Norman area, just northwest of Charlotte. Cowan’s Ford offers a championship golf course that is both beautiful and challenging. The layout follows Donald Ross principles by presenting a variety of challenging and fun-to-play shots for all levels of golfers. The golf course has wide fairways and bent grass greens. Ponds and natural creeks bring water into play on seven holes.

18-holes of stroke play determine seeding for match play. Players have the option to compete in either the "Championship" division or "Tournament" division (shorter course). In a new format this year, the Tournament division will compete using gross scores for stroke play qualifying and net scores for match play. Matches will be stroked off the low ball. The Championship division uses gross scores for match play.

 

Notable players in this year's field include:

• Defending champion Mallory Hetzel, 28, of Waynesville, N.C.: 6-time CGA champion. Currently ranked third women's golfer in the Carolinas. Head coach of the Western Carolina women's golf program.

• Dawn Woodard, 40, of Greer, S.C.: 2-time Carolinas Women's Match Play champion (2011 & '12). Currently ranked fourth among women golfers in the Carolinas. Won the Carolinas Women's Player of the Year honors the past three years. Has won the Women's South Carolina Golf Association Match Play Championship five consecutive years.

• Pat Brogden, 60, of Garner, N.C.: 9-time CGA champion, including 1999 Carolinas Women's Match Play champion. As of June 5, top ranked senior women's golfer in the Carolinas. Has been awarded the CGA's Senior Women's Player of the Year three times.

• Katie Rose Higgins, 23, of Lewisville, N.C.: 2013 Carolinas Women's Match Play & Carolinas Women's Amateur champion.

• Angela Stewart, 61, of Greenville, N.C.: Fourth ranked senior women's golfer in the Carolinas. Advanced to match play with partner Rachel Carpenter at this year's inaugural U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship. 

• Debbie Adams, 48, of Asheville, N.C.: 8-time CGA champion.

• Lea Venable, 41, of Simpsonville, S.C.: 3-time CGA champion.

Entry is open to any female golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by July 7, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a member club that does not exceed 40.4.

Tuesday, July 7
7:30am - Practice facilities and golf shop open.
8:00am - Stroke Play Qualifying Round, #1 tee.
7:00pm - Practice facilities and golf shop close.

Wednesday, July 8
7:30am - Practice facilities and golf shop open.
8:00am - First Round of Match Play for all flights, Morning Wave. #1 tee.
12:30pm (approx.) - Second Round of Match Play for Afternoon Wave. #1 and #10 tee.
7:00pm - Practice facilities and golf shop close.

Thursday, July 9
7:30am - Practice facilities and golf shop open.
8:00am - Semi-Final Round and Consolation Matches. #1 tee.
12:00pm (approx.) - Final Round Championship Match. #1 tee.
