Quarterfinals Set at SC Am Match Play
2012 champion Matthew Laydon of Charleston advances to quarterfinals
BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. -- Round of 32 and Round of 16 match play qualifying results of the 43rd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at The Windermere Club in Blythewood on Friday, June 19 (Par 35-36--71, 6661 yards, Course Rating: 72.3/135).
Round of 32 Re-Cap
Match play format is unpredictable. Two opponents battling each over 18-holes makes it compelling to watch. In Friday morning’s Round of 32 matches, 11 of 16 matches were won by the lower seed. Each of the top three seeds was eliminated.
Defending champion Bradley Kauffman, 20, of Greer was awarded the number one match play seed by virtue of his victory last year at Seabrook Island. On their 16th hole, Kauffman was dormie over 19-year-old Jake Smith of Duncan. Smith would win the hole with a par and then rattle off three consecutive birdies to win in 19 holes.
In stroke play qualifying, medalist Robert Lutomski of Mauldin bested his Round of 32 opponent Charles Dallery of Sumter by 11 strokes. The 18-year-old Dallery needed just two birdies to secure a 3 and 2 victory. Dallery finished T-4 earlier this year at the CGA Creed Jr. Boys’ Invitational.
No. 3 seed Wick Andrews of Columbia was three-up thru 12 holes against No. 30 seed Kyle Scruggs, 28, of Chesnee. Scruggs would win the next five holes, including an eagle on the par-4 eighth, to mount an improbable comeback and win 2 and 1.
With their match all square on the 17th tee, No. 29 seed Cary Phillips, 33, of Kershaw, aced the 125-yard hole with a gap wedge en route to besting No. 4 Robert Dargan of Columbia 2 up. It was Phillips’ fourth career hole-in-one.
