Quarterfinals Set at NC Match Play

The top three seeds remain in contention at Willow Creek at the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.  Unseasonably cool, but pleasant temperatures set in at High Point for the Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches.  In the morning, only three matches made it 18 holes, with one going 21 holes. 12 of 16 higher seeds advanced to the afternoon Round of 16 matches. 

At the turn in their afternoon matches, the top three seeds found themselves all behind heading to the back-nine; but all three made impressive comebacks to advance to the quarterfinals. Stroke play qualifying medalist Nolan Mills, IV of Charlotte came from 2-down with seven holes to play to force extra holes and closed out Henderson native Steven Brame with a birdie on the 21^st hole. David Kocher of Charlotte was 1-down and won three holes in a row to propel himself to a win over Wade Boteler of Mebane 4 & 2.

Defending champion Al Dickens, IV of Charlotte had yet to hit a shot that mattered until Friday afternoon.  He advanced into the Round of 16 by default due to injury to his opponent in the morning.  His Round of 16 match was against Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, who shot a front-nine 33 to take a 3-up lead. Dickens on finally hitting shots in the championship that counted, “It felt really good to have some pressure on, I told Dad (his caddie) in the first fairway how much fun that was.”  Fun was short lived as he found himself three-down with only nine holes to play. “Daniel played great, didn’t miss a shot and made a lot of putts, but I felt like I was playing well.” Dickens on his comeback, “I told myself I had to be patient, trust my process and wait for good stuff to come.”  Good stuff came in a hurry as Dickens birdied holes 10, 12 and 13 en route to winning five of the first six holes on the back nine to go two up and advance to the quarterfinals 2 & 1.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by August 5, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4.
