Massengill wins 19th NC Junior Girls'

Greenville, NC--Grace Massengill of Hickory, NC had to play 36 holes of stroke play and then win four matches all over four days to become the champion of the 19th NC Junior Girls' Championship at Brook Valley CC in Greenville, NC.  Massengill, a rising high school senior defeated Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay-Varina, NC 2up in Friday's championship match to claim the title as the state junior champion for 2015.  "The heat was the biggest obsticle this week" stated Massengill.  "it's difficult to play so many holes in the head, but you just had to get through it.  "It' really exciting to win and I'm happy to make my mom proud, my dad proud and my coach proud and myself proud" added Massengill after her victory.

 

Ashworth, a recent high school graduation, put up a great fight with neither player taking more than a one up lead through out the championship match.  Ashworth took a one up lead after eleven holes, but Massengill won the par four 14th and par four 15th to go one up with three holes left.  Both players made pars on 16 and 17 and Massengill went to 18 still with the one up lead.  On the par three 18th, Massengill hit her tee shot to within 7 feet of the hole.  Ashworth pulled her tee shot left into the rough.  Ashworth's chip ran past the hole some 8 feet and she was unable to make the par putt and conceded the putt to Massengill giving her the 2 up victory.

Brook Valley Country Club – an Ellis Maples designed course - located in Greenville, North Carolina is the newest addition located in the middle of prime East Carolinian real estate.
