Bhatia Takes NC Boys 13 and Under Medalist Award
BHATIA'S 68 TAKE MEDALIST AWARD AT NC JUNIOR BOYS' 13 AND UNDER CHAMPIONSHIP
2013 champion to be seeded #1 for match play
2013 NC Junior Boys' 13 and Under Champion Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, NC shot a two under par 68 to take the medalist award in the 19th NC Junior Boys' 13 and Under Championship. Bhatia, a rising eight grader, finished three shots ahead of Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst, NC and four shots ahead of Charlie Barr of Salisbury, NC and Matias La Grutta of Cary, NC. Bhatia started his qualifying round on the Donald Ross designed Asheboro Municipal golf course with a birdie on the par four first hole. Bhatia stumbled with two bogeys on his front side and made the turn with a one over par 37. On his back side, Bhatia made three birdies that included two two on the par three hole number 5 and 7.
The top 16 players advanced to match play in the championship flight. With three players tying for 15th place, a playoff was conducted with two of the three players advancing to the championship flight. Louis Dunn of Raleigh, NC and Tyler Dechellis of Davidson, NC made pars on the fist hole and Zach Roberts of Holly Springs, NC made a bogey ending the playoff after the first extra hole.
The match play portion of the tournament began Monday afternoon with a nine hole matches. Bhatia and second seed Van Paris both advanced to Tuesday morning's quarterfinals of the championship flight. Bhatia defeated Dunn 5 and 3 and Van Paris defeated Dechellis 4 and 2. After the quarterfinal matches that begin at 8 am, the semifinals will begin around 10 am. the 18-hole championship match is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:30 pm.
