155 North Carolina junior boys competed Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury for one of the 64 match play spots. The 18-hole stroke play qualifying portion of the 48th NC Junior Boy's Championship was played under clear blue skies with temperatures peaking over 100 degrees.

16 competitors broke par on the par-71, 6,613 yard layout. Four players tied at the top with 3-under-par 68s: Patrick Stephenson of Four Oaks, Logan Shuping of Salisbury, Jack Massei of Cary, and Nicholas Lyerly of Salisbury. Lyerly, the 7th ranked junior in the state, won a playoff for the #1 match play seed with a birdie on the 2nd hole.

"I hit every green on my front nine, 15 of 18 total," said Lyerly of his ability to make four total birdies, three on his first nine holes. The 16-year-old rising high school junior made a lone bogey en route to his 3-under-par day.

Stephenson and Shuping, two East Carolina University commits, played in the same group this morning.

"I took advantage of the [three] par-5s. I birdied each of them", said Stephenson, who won the TYGA Bojangles Junior earlier this month. The 17-year-old rising high school senior also made another birdie and a bogey on his round.

17-year-old Shuping was also pleased with his opening round. "I just really played solid today," said the 16th ranked N.C. junior boy. "I hit a lot of greens."

"I played a really steady round of golf, no big mistakes, and made a few putts." said Massei, a 15-year-old rising high school sophomore. "I'm really looking forward to match play." He combined an eagle, three birdies, and two bogeys for his 3-under par performance.

The cut-line fell at 4-over par 5, with a 16-for-8 playoff deciding the final match play spots. The battle for the 64th seed took 9 holes to be won, with Mason Elmore of Charlotte edging Walter Brinker of Sanford at 8:55pm.

The match play portion of the championship begins Wednesday with the Round of 64 and Round of 32 matches. Two rounds are scheduled to be played each day on Thursday and Friday, with the championship match contested Friday afternoon.

For many of the players in the field, this championship is their only exposure to match play competition. There is a lot of excitement amongst the field for this format. Stephenson, the 4th ranked junior in N.C., offered insight into match play strategy, "You have to react to your opponent more so than in stroke play. If he hits a bad drive, then you might take out an iron. Vice versa on a par-5 he reaches in two, you might have to go for it rather than laying up."

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 26, 2015, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
