Final Results
Cary, NC – Final results for the 11th Dogwood State Junior Championship hosted by the Prestonwood Country Club (Meadows) in Cary, NC on Thursday, August 6, 2015.
Walter Brinker of Sanford, NC went wire to wire to win the 11th Dogwood State Junior Championship. Brinker started the tournament in the first group on Tuesday morning, then ended the tournament in the final group with the winning putt on Thursday evening. The rising senior in high school shot rounds of 67-71-72 for a three day total of six under par. Brinker started the final round the way he wanted with a birdie on the first hole. An unfortunate double bogey on the par three second looked to rattle him “I just got unlucky on that hole but I stayed patient and tried to focus on one shot at a time, the rain delay helped me refocus” stated the victor after the round. Two separate rain delays totaling three plus hours occurred during the final round. Jack Massei of Cary, NC and Brett McLamb of Coats, NC both made runs at Brinker but were unable to catch him as Brinker birded two of his last four holes for a two shot victory of Massei who finished solo second.
Callista Rice of Mars Hill, NC, successfully defended her title as she fired rounds of 71-73-74 to cruise to a three shot victory. Rice managed to fight 2014 Carolinas Player of the Year, Sarah Spicer of Bahama, NC as well as Sarah Funderburg of Wilmington, NC. “This is my favorite event,” said the jubilant Rice after the round. “I tried to be calm and play the course as it is, second day I just wanted to stay where I was, the final day I tried for just pars,” added the rising junior in high school. After bogeying 15-16, Rice saw her four shot lead dwindle to two, “I was just trying to relax because I knew I was getting up tight but par 5s are my strength because I am long, so I wanted to get a birdie putt.” Rice was able remain calm converting pars on her final two holes to claim the victory.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend a special thanks to Matt Massei, General Manager at Prestonwood Country Club, Larry Connor, Director of Golf, Brian Burgwyn, Junior Golf Director, and Tony Mobino, Tournament Director and their staffs for the extended courtesy towards our players and parents.
