Virginias wins 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 over Carolinas

The Carolinas junior team knew that had to play great golf in Sunday's singles matches to over come the four point deficit from Saturday, but a determined Virginias team played too tough down the stretch.  While the Carolinas won Sunday's portion of the matches 4 1/2 to 3 1/2, in the end the Virginias scored a 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 victory in the 33rd Virginias-Carolinas Junior Team Matches and the Vinny Giles Cup will reside in Richmond until at least next summer.

 

Stephen Carroll of Concord, NC got the Carolinas on the board early defeating Larkin Gross of Center Cross, VA 3 and 2 in the first match of the day.  Reed Bentley of Wellford, SC and Brady Hinkle of Lancaster, SC both won their matches 2 and 1 and 1 up respectfully.  NC Junior champion Jack Massei of Cary, NC halved his match with Jimmie Massie of Lynchburg, VA with each player finishing their match at 6 under par.  SC Junior Match Play champion Nick Willis of Cowpen, SC defeated three-time Virginia Junior champion Mark Lawrence, Jr. of Richmond, VA.

 

A total of 16 points are awarded with each match being worth one point.  The Carolinas needed to win 8 points to retain the Vinny Giles Cup while the Virginias team needed to win eight and one half points to win the matches.  Each team is selected based on their participation and finishes in junior championship over the past six months administered by the Carolinas Golf Association, the Virginia State Golf Association and the West Virginia State Golf Association.

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGF has distributed more than $1,500,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
