Virginias jumped out to an early four point lead following morning four-ball matches (8-4), before an afternoon surge by the Carolinas in foursomes encounters (8-4). A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side. The event concludes with 24 final-day singles matches on Saturday.
All told on day one, Virginias regulars outscored Carolinas by three points (9½-6½), while Carolinas’ senior contingent won five matches (5½-2½). The first day result seemingly illustrates how evenly-matched the two teams’ are in depth and talent.
In morning four-ball matches, Virginias regulars won five of eight matches and halved two others. For Virginias, team match veterans Keith Decker, Pat Carter, and Scott Shingler each were a part of securing wins. Decker partnered with Jon Hurst, Carter combined with Sam O'Dell, and Shingler teamed with Justin Young for triumphs. This year is Keith Decker's 31st appearance in the Captain's Putter Matches, tying him with Vinny Giles for the most all-time.
For Carolinas’ regulars, first-timers Matt Elliott-Robert Lutomski were the lone team to secure a victory in morning four-ball matches.
On the seniors’ side the morning matches were halved 2-2. The Carolinas combinations of Paul Simson-Russ Perry and Senior Four-Ball champs Jim Grainger-Rick Cloninger each came away with victories. Virginias’ senior wins came courtesy of Jack Allara-Dave Pulk and Leon Roday-Skip Zobel.
After lunch in foursome matches, the Carolinas team claimed six outright wins to climb back into the match, erasing the Virginias' four point morning lead. Simson-Perry posted another convincing win to complete an undefeated first day. For Virginias, Shingler-Young won again to claim all of the possible two points on day one of the matches.
Virginias will be vying for its fifth straight victory when the event concludes with 24 concluding singles matches on Saturday. Virginias has never claimed the event five straight years in the matches’ history. Virginias needs 12 more points in order to reclaim the Captain’s Putter Trophy, while Carolinas needs 12.5 points for victory. The matches rotate annually between sites in the Virginias and Carolinas.

About the Captain's Putter Team Matches
The matches consist of two days of competition, with opening round four-ball and foursome matches (Friday, Oct. 16), followed by final-day singles matches (Saturday, Oct. 17). A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side.
Last year’s Captain’s Putter matches produced a close final result as the Virginias team notched a one-point victory (24½-23½) at The Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie, VA. Virginias retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and captured its fourth straight victory in the matches, a first in the history of the event for Virginias.
Team Virginias, owner of a one-point advantage following first day four-ball and foursome matches, kept that narrow lead after the two teams split 24 singles’ encounters, 12-12 to claim the one point win. Over the two days of matches, Virginias’ regulars outscored their opponents by four points (18-14), while Carolinas’ seniors held a three-point advantage (9½-6½). The one-point margin of victory was the closest since the event went to a one-point per match format in 2002.
