Five-under 67 gives defending champ early lead

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- First round results from the 66^th Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association on Tuesday, July 28 (Course rating: 74.0, 139; 7402 yards, Par 36-36--72).

If Henry Shimp is to defend last year's title, he took an important step Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club. The rising high school senior from Charlotte, N.C., played a mistake-free opening round, carding three birdies and an eagle on the 7402 yard layout.

Starting his day on No. 10, Shimp eagled the second hole he played, the 553 yard par-5 11th. "It was a solid start," commented Shimp, who has committed to playing college golf at Stanford University. "Then luckily the last six holes I got it going a little bit. I made birdies on the last three of four holes."

In his most recent tournament round two weeks ago, Shimp held the 54-hole lead at the Carolinas Amateur before a final round 71 to tie for 6th.

"I want to win maybe a little bit more than last year," said Shimp about defending his Carolinas Junior title.

"But the mentality really isn't too different," he added. "I want to win any tournament I play in."

Shimp's five-under-par 67 gives him a one shot lead over Christian Salzer of Sumter, S.C. and Patrick Golden of Murrells Inlet, S.C. Salzer, a rising high school senior, has verbally committed to playing golf at NC State. He recently won the South Carolina Golf Association Junior and played in the U.S. Junior. His first round of the Carolinas Junior consisted of five birdies with a bogey.

Golden is a rising high school junior. He finished tied for 6th in the SC Junior that Salzer won. "I hit the ball really well today; I think I only missed one green," said Golden after his bogey-free 68 on Tuesday. "Everything felt good on the range and I carried it to the course. It was a real easy, stress-free day."

Play was halted for 45 minutes on Tuesday due to lightning in the area. On Wednesday, 139 players will try to make the 36-hole cut to the low 60 and ties for the final round.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by July 30, 2015, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
