CGA Announces 42nd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship

WEST END, NC (6/2/14) -- The 42nd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will be held at the Seabrook Island Club (Ocean Winds) at Seabrook Island, SC on June 4-8, 2014.

66 players have qualified for the 2014 SC Amateur Match Play Championship. The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for match play. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 4, 2014, is a legal resident of South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.

Ocean Winds Golf Course, designed by Willard Byrd, is a 6,765-yard, par 72 course that takes you to the Atlantic Ocean where the swirling breezes provide a challenging test of ability. The signature 15th hole of Ocean Winds, a par 3, offers spectacular views of the marshland that makes golf and life on Seabrook so special. A picturesque live oak on the right may cause the eye and alignment to err slightly more left, but accuracy is the key to hit this small, well protected, intimidating target. The Carolina Golf Club has previously hosted the 1979 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball and the 2006 Carolinas Women's Four-Ball.

Adam Goins of Gaffney, SC defeated Austin Cody of Charleston, SC by a score of 2&1 to claim the 2013 South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. After finishing second in 2012, Adam played aggressively throughout the Championship match to claim his first CGA victory. Neither Goins nor Cody are due back this year to compete for the Championship.

Notables in this year's field include 2012 Champion Matthew Laydon of Charleston, SC; Austin Zoller of Summervile, SC; Taylor White of Duncan, SC; Thomas Todd III of Greenville, SC, and Johnson Holliday of Aynor, SC.

Thursday, June 5              Round 2 - Stroke play qualifying. Tee times at 8:00am off #1 and #10 tees.
                                           Field cut to low 32 scores for match play. Playoff for medalist and last match play
                                           position.
Friday, June 6                   First & second rounds of match play. (18 holes each round)
Saturday, June7                Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of match play. (18 holes each round)
Sunday, June 8                 Championship Match (18 holes)
                                            Awards ceremony immediately following play at scoreboard
