Old Chatham Golf Club to Host the 21st North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship, September 19-21

WEST END, NC -- The Carolinas Golf Association's 21st North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship will be played at Durham’s Old Chatham Golf Club on September 19-21. In 2009, Old Chatham GC hosted the North Carolina Amateur Championship. The golf course is a 1991 Rees Jones design that will play at 6,800 yards with a par of 72.

Defending champion Jeff Allen, 40, of Jacksonville, returns to defend his title won at Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington. Five other previous champions will be in the field: Gary Robinson (2007) of Fayetteville, Uly Grisette (2008 and 2010) of Clemmons, Paul Tucker (2009) of Waxhew, Brian Westveer (2011) of Charlotte, and Scott Harvey (2012) of Greensboro. Earlier this month Harvey won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Allen, Harvey and Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington battled for last year’s North Carolina Mid-Amateur title in a three-way playoff that saw Allen convert a birdie putt on the second playoff hole for the victory.

The starting field includes 130 players. First and second round starting times can be found at: https://www.ghintpp.com/carolinasgolf/TPPOnlineScoring/Pairings.aspx?id=507

The championship is comprised of 54-holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round. Merchandise prizes are awarded to the top 30 finishers at the championship proper and to the medalist at each qualifying site. Champion receives a trophy, merchandise from host club and possession of the P.J. Boatwright Trophy for the ensuing year.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 30th birthday by September 19, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4.

The North Carolina Mid-Amateur is one of 40 championships conducted annually by the Carolinas Golf Association, which is in its 105th year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.
