LANCASTER, S.C. - Congratulations to Mia Carles of Clinton, S.C. on winning the 58th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship. Finishing at 11-under par with scores of 67 and 66, she won by six strokes.

Carles is now a three-time CGA Champion. Earlier this month, she went back-to-back at the South Carolina Junior Girls’ Match Play Championship.

“I’m just so glad I can be out here, and I just enjoy spending time with all my friends,” Carles said. “It’s so much fun.”

Edgewater Golf Club created a tough test for the field and the hot and humid weather didn’t provide any favors. Narrow fairways tested players’ accuracy off the tee and the greens warranted special attention to detail when putting.

But, Carles was able to navigate the course with hardly any issues — she only had two bogeys in the 36 contested holes.

She worked with her dad during her practice round earlier in the week to create a game plan for the course.

“He just helps me pick good alignments or places where you should or should not miss,” Carles said.

Carles had a five-stroke lead after Round 1. She played her final eight holes 5-under par with three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 thirteenth.

Ira Joshi, of Pinehurst N.C. fired an opening round 72 to sit five shots back. She rallied on Tuesday to get in the red figures and finish in solo-second at 5-under, 144 overall, in the championship.

Despite efforts from the field trying to catch Carles, she played lights out with a bogey-free 66. She poured it on with three birdies in her last four holes.

“I was just staying really consistent throughout the whole day,” Carles said. “My putting was on point and I was just great off the tee all day.”

Her sisters, Gabi and Hannah Carles, who were also competing at Edgewater this week, drove around alongside Mia for her final nine holes of the championship.

“My little sister played behind me so I got to see her make a few putts on the waiting holes, and I’m glad they could come out here,” Carles said.

Carles’ total score of 133 set the lowest score in championship history. The 2021 Twin States Champion, Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C.  previously held the record with a total score of 137.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank General Manager, Todd Nalettte, Assistant Golf Professional, Mikhail Young, Superintendent, Phil Jenkins, Assistant Superintendent, Fred Phipps and Edgewater Golf Club’s members for a fantastic week.
