Hallie Wilson Capitalizes on Consistency for 28th North Carolina Junior Girls Championship

LOCATION – GREENVILLE, N.C.

    Hallie Wilson of Lewisville, NC, was the model of consistency during the 28th North Carolina Junior Girls Championship. She posted identical scores across three rounds en route to a tournament win. Wilson finished the event 3-over-par, shooting 73-73-73. After acquiring the lead late in the second round, she never looked back and retained her spot atop the leaderboard all the way to the 18th hole in the final round. 

    Wilson says that her key to consistency wasn’t all that complicated. “I kept on putting myself in the same positions, I tried to stay aggressive and tried to place myself in the best spots I could with a difficult course and difficult pin locations.” This strategy certainly showed on the scorecard for her each day, and is what she accredits to her success. Some notable highlights of Wilson’s victory include 10 consecutive pars during her first round, and just two bogeys throughout the entirety of the final round. 

    This championship is an official USGA Exemption Event, which carries an exemption into the 75th U.S. Girls Junior Championship. Wilson will be competing against the most decorated junior girls golfers in the nation at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, CA, from July 15-20.

    Rachel Joyce of Pinehurst, NC, and Saia Rampersaud of Durham, NC, both showcased impressive performances as well, placing in second and third respectively. Joyce strung together nine pars in a row across the tail end of her second round, and the beginning of the final round. The runner-up finished 7-over-par, with scores of 74-77-72. Saia Rampersaud posted the lone sub-par round of the event during the opening day, as she finished the tournament 8-over-par, shooting 71-80-73. Defending champion Ella June Hannant of Pikeville, NC, closed out in fourth place, posting 74-75-77 and 10-over-par.

    Players dealt with blistering heat and extreme humidity during all three days of the tournament. Significantly during the second round, where temperatures reached as high as 97 degrees during the early afternoon. All golfers prevailed through the harsh weather, as they stayed hydrated and were gifted handheld fans prior to the first round to help cool off. Champion Hallie Wilson says playing well in scorching heat isn’t an easy task but she found ways to power through it. “My towel was my best friend this whole week and I made sure I was staying hydrated by drinking a bunch of water.”
