The 2019 Vicki DiSantis Girls’ Champion, Chloe Holder of Williamston, S.C. shook the title defense nerves today and took an early opening round lead. Holder fired off a 3-under-par, 69 with six birdies on the day to lead by one heading into the final round.

Holder got off to a hot start with three birdies in a row thanks to solid ball striking and one-putts on all three holes. “My putter was rolling really nicely today,” she said. “I was hitting a lot of greens and hitting it close starting out which got me going in the beginning. I just kept it rolling from there.”

The 2020 Mid-Atlantic Girls’ team member wavered towards the end of her front nine, closing it out with three bogeys. “Honestly I was just trying to forget that I won it last year and put that out of my mind. I just wanted to go as low as I possibly could today and make birdies,” said Holder. After the turn, she took control and accomplished that game plan.

Holder was able to round out her scorecard with a bogey-free back nine and two birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 to secure her spot atop the leaderboard.

Isabella Rawl of Lexington, S.C. holds second position just one stroke off of the lead at 2-under-par, 70. Rawl played a consistent round today with a bogey-free, 1-under front nine. She also carded the only eagle of the day on No. 2 which got her back nine off to a strong start.

Madison Messimer of Myrtle Beach, S.C. is the only other player under par, finishing in solo third with an opening round of 1-under-par, 71. Fourth position is staked by a three-way tie at even-par, 72. Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, N.C., Ella Kue of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Abby Franks of Roebuck, S.C. are still well within striking distance entering the final round in fourth.

With a tight leaderboard and 18 holes left to play, we can expect exciting competition and a fight for the title tomorrow. The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with starting times until 10:42 a.m. off of Nos. 1 and 10.
