Pat Brogden of Garner, NC Holds One Shot Lead at 16th Carolinas Women's Senior Amateur
First Round Results of the 16th Carolinas Women’s Senior Amateur Championship Hosted by Governors Club (Lakes-Foothills) on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 Par 36—36---72 5659 yards (Course/Slope Rating: 72.7/131).
Three time Carolinas Women’s Senior Amateur Champion Pat Brogden of Garner, NC shot a 3-over par round of 75 to take the lead by one shot over Leigh Coulter of Hopkins, SC. Brogden carded only two birdies on the day. “It could have been better out there,” Brogden said. “But it could have been a lot worse. I think I had four 3-putts so I feel the even par round is out there.” Brogden’s precise shot making enabled her to hit greens and have a chance at making birdies. “I think I only missed one fairway today which is pretty good on this course,” Brogden laughed.
Lurking behind Brogden you will find Leigh Coulter of Hopkins, SC who is itching for her first CGA title. Coulter carded three birdies on the day. Angela Stewart of Greenville, NC is only two shots back and is also looking to add another CGA trophy to her display. Therese St. Peter of Durham, NC is only three shots back of the lead and is also hoping to capture that first CGA championship title. “It’s sure to be a horse race tomorrow,” Stewart said. “But I’m looking forward to a great day. We have a great final pairing.”
Three out of the four leaders recently made match play at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship that was held back in September. In fact all of the Carolinas players advanced to match play in their countries national championship which speaks volumes for the level of play that is in our region. “There are some great players here. It can go anyone’s way on this challenging golf course,” Brogden added.
Carole Jones of Hillsborough, NC holds the current lead on the Super Senior prize (Age 65+) while Bonnie Montgomery of Jamestown, NC fired an impressive round of 77 to lead the Tournament Division by four shots. This division plays a shorter course.
The final round will begin at Governors Club in a shot-gun start at 9:30am on Wednesday.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association which is in its 105th year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas for men, women an kids of all ages and abilities.
