Harvey's 66 Not Round of the Day at N.C. Mid-Amateur Championship
DURHAM, N.C. – Second round results of the 21st North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship hosted by Old Chatham GC in Durham, N.C. on Saturday, September 20, 2014 (6900 yards, par 36-36—72, 73.7,132).
The lead belongs to Scott Harvey, 36, of Greensboro, who fired a six-under par 66 on Saturday. Harvey continues his stellar play of late, having won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship earlier this month. The highlight of his round today was a hole-out for eagle from 120 yards with a sand wedge on the 389 yard par-4 eighth. “The shot was a full 56 degree club. I didn’t see it go in.” When asked about the difference between today and his first round of one-under par 71, he replied “I hit every green and didn’t make any bogeys... and the putts just dropped.” Harvey’s two-round total of 137 gives him a one-shot advantage heading into the championship’s final day. After losing in a playoff last year, the five-time CGA champion is looking for his second title in this event, winning in 2012 at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount.
The focal point of conversation on the clubhouse porch was about Daniel Neveu, 47, of Pinehurst. Neveu posted an eight-under par 64 and the new competitive course record for Old Chatham GC. He was 14 shots better than his 78 in yesterday’s round for a two-day total of 142 and is in fourth place. “Yesterday I didn’t putt very well but I kept on putting aggressively today no matter what,” said Neveu. He tallied nine birdies with the lone blemish of his second round coming on a three-putt bogey at the 17th hole.
First round co-leader Joe Jaspers, 48, of Huntersville, carded another three-under par 69. “I am making putts here and there and avoiding the big numbers,” said Jaspers of his consistent play. He is one-shot behind Harvey at six-under par 138. Banks Wood, Jr., 31, of Charlotte, another co-leader entering the second round, is in third place at 141 after an even-par round of 72.
Last year’s winner, Jeff Allen of Jacksonville, recorded a four-over par 76 and is nine-over par for the championship.
65 players made the 36-hole cut at 11-over par 155. Final round tee times will begin Sunday at 8:00am from the 1st and 10th holes. The leaders will tee off the 1st hole at 9:40am.
