CGA Announces 47th North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship

WEST END, NC (6/16/14) -- The 47th North Carolina Junior Boys' Championship will be held at the Roaring Gap Club in Roaring Gap, NC on June 17-20, 2014.

119 players have qualified for the 2014 NC Junior Boys' Championship. The championship format is match play with an 18 hole stroke play qualifier (on Tuesday, June 17th) to determine the seeding for match play. The top 63 boys from the stroke play qualifier will advance to match play. Defending champion Austin Inman of Wilmington, NC will be seeded number one for match play. Exempt players were accepted into the championship at the time of their entry. Non-exempt players gained entry into the championship through sectional qualifying held at Cardinal Country Club in Pine Level, NC and Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin, NC.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by June 20, 2014, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.

According to W. Dunlop White III writing for Triad Golf Magazine, "The [Roaring Gap] club dates back to 1925, when Leonard Tufts, president of Pinehurst Inc., and a group of North Carolina businessmen, proposed the development of a private mountain community to reside during the summer months. In 1926, Roaring Gap Club was formed, and Tufts served as the first president. In fact, brochures and press releases referred to Roaring Gap as “the Pinehurst of the Mountains”. Tufts made sure that Donald Ross, his golf director in Pinehurst, was the hands-on architect from start to finish. After all, Ross already had made quite a name for himself outside Pinehurst by designing courses during the summers throughout the northeast." In 2005, Kris Spence completed an extensive restoration of the club. The project focused on a number of areas, most notably green and bunker restoration. Using old aerial photos and many original plans drawn by Ross, Spence brought back to life a unique set of greens buried under eight decades' worth of topdressing and organic material. The fairways remain a mixture of native rye grass, Kentucky bluegrass, and poa annua. Meanwhile, the greens retain an old-school mix of bent grass and poa annua. Tucked away in a cozy little spot of the Blue Ridge Mountains -- perched 3000 feet above sea level -- the club offers mind-boggling vistas of Pilot Mountain and the Winston-Salem skyline in the horizon.

In the 2013 NC Junior Boys' championship, Austin Inman of Wilmington, NC defeated 2013 qualifying medalist Keegan Hoff, Charlotte, NC by a score of 3 and 2 to win the Championship. Inman will return this return to defend his championship and will be seeded number one for the opening round of match play.

Other notables in this year's strong field include 2013 semi-finalist Stephen Saleeby of Raleigh, NC; 2013 round of 16 competitors - James Mishoe, Cary, NC; Will Minton, Raleigh, NC; John Landers, Raleigh, NC; and David Kocher, Charlotte, NC. Also in this year's field are former Carolinas Boys 13 and Under Champions - 2010 Champion Eric Bae of Cary, NC; 2011 Champion James Suggs of Pinehurst, NC; 2012 Champion Chris Kim of Cary, NC and 2013 Champion Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, NC.
