CGA Announces 63rd Carolinas Four-Ball Championship

WEST END, NC (5/2/14) -- The Carolinas Four-Ball Championship could just as easily be called the "Camden Four-Ball Championship" or the "Camden Two-Man Invitational."

That's because the popular, prestigious Carolinas Golf Association event has already been played at historic Camden (SC) Country Club more than 50 times.

The first Carolinas Four-Ball was played at Camden CC in 1950, with Benny Goodes of Reidsville, NC and Posey Isley of Leaksville, NC, winning the title. Since then, it has been played elsewhere only five times -- in 1952 when it was conducted at Wilson (NC) Country Club, in 1953 at the CC of Spartanburg, SC, in 1968 and 1985 at Red Fox CC in Tryon, NC, and in 2000 at Florence (SC) Country Club.

Camden CC is almost the perfect layout for this four-ball match play event. Short in length, but exceedingly demanding, the 6,455-yard, par-70 Camden layout is one of the most demanding in the Carolinas. Chartered in 1899 as a place for golf, polo and "other athletic sports" and established in 1903, the golf course was redesigned in the late 1920s by renowned golf course designer/architect Donald Ross.  Another recent redesign took place two winters ago under the director of Kris Spence.  Spence has created new and larger greens, more length, reshaped bunkering, and additional vegetation and sandy areas.

Camden CC also hosted the Carolinas Amateur in 1985, the Carolinas Pro-Amateur in 2003, the Carolinas Senior Amateur in 2005, the South Carolinas Amateur Match Play in 2006, the Carolinas Junior Match Play in 2010 and the 2013 Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship.  The 2014 championship begins Wednesday May 7th with the first round of a 36-hole qualifier. The CGA will host a "Pig Pickin" cookout for all players after the first round.

After the second round of four-ball stroke play qualifying on May 8th, the field is cut to the low 32 teams for match play. The first two rounds of match play will commence on May 9th. After four rounds of match play over two days, the scheduled 18-hole championship match will be played on Sunday, May 11.

Last year’s winners Paul Tucker, Waxhaw, NC and Brent Roof, Columbia, SC are returning this year and will be seeded No. 1 for match play. Tucker and Roof, also runners-up in the 61st Carolinas Four-Ball Championship, are a formidable team and will face other proven contenders in Walter Todd Sr. and Walt Todd, Jr. of Laurens, SC; 2012 Carolinas Four-Ball Champion Matthew Crenshaw, Burlington, NC partnered this year with Jonathan Jackson, Chapel Hill, NC; and 2013 Quarterfinalist Taylor Dickson, Gastonia, NC and James Chapman of Raleigh, NC.
