CGA Announces 46th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship

WEST END, NC -- The Carolinas Golf Association's 46th Senior Four-Ball Championship will take place on April 15-17 at River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC.

The Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 30 scores and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff.

Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by April 15, 2014, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index at a member club.

River Run CC is a private golf club located in Davidson, NC just minutes north of Charlotte, NC. The course consists of 7,100 yards of manicured Bermuda fairways and Bentgrass greens. A popular venue for championship play, the club has previously hosted the 1999 North Carolina Four-Ball; the 2000 North Carolina Amateur; the 2003 North Carolina Senior; the 2010 North Carolina Senior Four-Ball; the 2011 North Carolina Mid-Amateur; and the 2013 North Carolina Four-Ball championships.

The field for the 2014 championship is expected to consist of 88 teams. Exempt players were automatically accepted into the championship while others were selected after close of entries with the lowest team handicap indexes gaining entry.

Returning to defend their 2013 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball victory is the team of Arlis Pike, Kernersville, NC and Michael Roland, Winston-Salem, NC. Leading the 2013 championship wire-to-wire, Arlis and Roland scored a 3 round total of 198 to win by 2 strokes over the team of Bernie Shealy and Tim Teaster, both of Columbia, SC.

Other notable teams to make the 2014 field include three-time Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Champions (2008, 2010, and 2012) Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, NC; 2011 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball champion Bill Smunk teamed up with 2013 second place finisher Bernie Shealy; and 2006 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball champion Ernie Newton, High Point, NC teamed with partner Jim Pridgen, Raleigh, NC.
