Cayla Smith, Easley, SC and Dwight Cauthen, Jr of Columbia, SC Capture SC Junior Match Play Championships

Lancaster, SC—Cayla Smith of Easley, SC had to go extra holes, but was up to the challenge and captured the SC Junior Girls’ Match Play Championship defeating Annika Bovender of Mt. Pleasant, SC on the 20^th hole.  Bovender, a rising high school junior, took an early lead in championship match, but Smith birdied five out six holes to take a three up lead through number 11.  The match stay tied through fifteen when Bovender battled back and won the last three holes to send the match into extra holes.  Smith then secured the junior title with a par four on the second extra hole.

 

In the boys’ championship, Dwight Cauthen, Jr. of Columbia, SC defeated Jake Carter of Easley, SC, 3 & 2 in the championship match.  Cauthen and Carter’s made the turn all square in the final match, but then Cauthen won four of the next six to win his first CGA championship. 

 

This annual junior championship was conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
