Steven Brame Wins the 53rd North Carolina Amateur Championship by One Stroke
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Final results of the 53rd North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem, NC on Sunday, June 16, 2013 (6731 yards, par 36-35—71, 72.8/136).
Call it karma or call it bad luck turned good, 30-year-old Steven
Brame of
“The tournament helped me get over it,” Brame said about the accident. “When I went around the corner of the clubhouse and saw the truck, my heart hit the ground. I was upset for a while but I realized there was nothing I could do about it.”
Brame had to dodge two players that gave a great run at the lead. Bailey Patrick, Jr. posted a 64 (274) to claim the clubhouse lead. Despite a four-over thru five holes start to his round, Trevor Cone played his last 13 holes at 8-under to card a 67 and also post 274.
Walking down the 16th fairway Brame knew how he stood. “I said to my dad (and caddie) that three pars would win it.” Brame took care of business on holes 16 and 17 with par 4’s. However his approach shot on 18 missed short-side left of the flagstick leaving a delicate up-and-down for the win. “I am either going to win it or lose it right here,” Brame said to his dad about the need to get up-and-down for the win. He hit an excellent chip shot to 2 ½ feet and holed the putt for the win.
Brame took a different route to college golf. Out of high school
he decided to work for his dad in the family copier business for a few years.
At age 23 he felt that his golf game was good enough and was ready for college.
