Carolinas Golf Association Announces 2013 Championship and Tournament Schedule
WEST END, N.C. - The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) has announced its 2013 schedule of championships and tournaments. The CGA is entering its 104th year of conducting state and regional championships for amateur golfers.
This year the CGA will conduct 237 tournaments including: 41 championships, 41 CGA championship qualifiers, 15 USGA national championship qualifiers, five team match events, 99 one-day tournaments and 46 Tarheel Youth Golf Association and junior invitational events.
The CGA's flagship event, the Carolinas Amateur Championship, will be contested July 11-14 at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, SC. The Ocean Course played host to the 2012 PGA Championship, 2007 Senior PGA Championship and 1991 Ryder Cup. Course is annually ranked in the top 25 golf courses in the country by Golfweek and Golf Digest. Designed by Pete Dye, The Ocean Course will be hosting its first Carolinas Amateur championship and second CGA championship (1995 South Carolina Amateur Match Play). This year marks the 99th playing of this event dating back to 1910.
Recently renovated Camden Country Club will host two CGA majors in 2013. The 62nd Carolinas Four-Ball Championship is set for May 1-5. The event has been conducted at the Donald Ross design every year since 1950 except in 1953 (Country Club of Spartanburg), 1968 and 1985 (Red Fox Country Club), and 2000 (Florence Country Club). The 52nd Carolinas Senior will be played September 10-12 at Camden for the second time (2005).
The CGA will visit the state capitals of both states this year. Two majors will be held in Raleigh, NC with the 33rd Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship set for April 12-14 at Raleigh Country Club and the 4th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will be played at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, NC from July 31-August 4. The 15th Carolinas Women’s Senior Championship travels to Columbia Country Club in Columbia, SC on October 1-2.
Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem, NC will host the 53rd North Carolina Amateur Championship. The 72-hole stroke play championship for males age 13 and over is set for June 13-16, the same week as the U.S. Open Championship. The Donald Ross design will host its ninth CGA major.
The 8th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship returns to Myrtlewood Golf Club's PineHills course in Myrtle Beach, SC for the second consecutive year over Labor Day weekend. The event is open to male-female teams that are residents of one of the Carolinas.
The 68th Captain's Putter Team Match will feature some of the best male amateur golfers in the region. Event heads to Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, NC on October 11-12 for the fifth time (1971, 85, 99, 2003). Each amateur team is comprised of 16 male regular golfers and eight male seniors from North and South Carolina and from Virginia and West Virginia. Players for both of these team competitions are invited, based upon rankings and playing history.
The 47th Carolinas Father-Son Championship will be contested on Friday, July 26 at five Pinehurst, NC area courses. The host clubs are Country Club of Whispering Pines (Whispering Pines, NC), Pinewild Country Club (Pinehurst, NC), Legacy Golf Links (Aberdeen, NC), Longleaf Golf Club (Southern Pines, NC) and Seven Lakes Country Club (Seven Lakes, NC). This event annually draws over 300 Father-Son teams from all over the Carolinas.
The CGA will play the 16th Carolinas Parent-Child Championship at the Country Club of Whispering Pines on July 26 for the first time. The Parent-Child is open to persons of all ages and teams are comprised of any family combination other than male-male.
In women's golf, the CGA assumed the activities of the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association thus adding three events to the association’s growing tournament schedule. The three events are the 87th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship on May 21-23 at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, NC, the 57th Carolinas-Virginias Women’s Team Matches hosted by Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV on July 15-17 and the 7th Carolinas Girls 15 and Under Championship set for July 7-9 at the Country Club of Whispering Pines.
In junior golf, the CGA boasts an impressive championship season this year for boys and girls. Due to the growth of junior girls’ golf in the state, the 17th North Carolina Junior Girls Championship will be contested at its own venue on June 18-21 at Bentwinds Golf & Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, NC. The North Carolina Junior Boys Championship will be played on the same dates a few miles away at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.
The 64th Carolinas Junior Championship (boys) heads to High Point Country Club in High Point, NC on July 30-August 1. The 57th Carolinas Junior Girls Match Play Championship will be played June 25-27 at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning, SC and the 47th Twin States Championship (girls) is scheduled for July 30-31 at Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club in Morganton, NC. The 8th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls Championship returns to its annual site at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, NC on May 4-5. The 9th Dogwood State Junior goes to River Landing in Wallace, NC on July 16-18. The 36th South Carolina Junior Match Play will be hosted by Lancaster Golf Club in Lancaster, SC from July 9-12.
The Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA), which is the CGA’s program for North Carolina junior golfers, offers a tournament schedule geared for all levels of abilities. The 46 events set for this year are open to boys and girls ages 12-18. The popular CGA One-Day Tournament Program offers individual and four-ball competitions using both gross and net formats. The 43 tournaments are open any CGA member with a USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club.
The Carolinas Senior Four-Ball One-Day Tournament series will have 46 events on its 2013 schedule. The popular two-man, best-ball one-day tournaments open to male amateurs over the age of 55, historically have more entrants than spots available at most events. Entries are accepted on a first come-first served basis for all one-day tournaments.
