It was a beautiful two days for fall golf at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines, N.C. for the 2nd Carolinas Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. took home the win, shooting a 71-77 to finish at 148, 4-over, and secured the win on the first playoff hole with a birdie.

In Round 1, Fobes carded three birdies on her first nine. Then, after she made the turn, she made an impressive eagle on the par-4 hole #1. She came in with a 71, 1-under for the day, putting herself at the top of the leaderboard by four strokes. Defending Champion Michelle Jarman of Wilmington, N.C., and Courtney Stiles of Pinehurst, N.C., were both tied for second place at 3-over, four strokes back from Fobes.

“The first day, my biggest strength was driving the ball. I was able to put it in the fairway a lot and get a wedge in my hand,” Fobes shared regarding the best part of her game.

In the Final Round, Fobes had a great first nine. She carded a string of six pars to kick off her round, followed by a birdie and two more pars to make the turn 1-under for the day so far, 2-under total. Jarman played an impressive, bogey-free first nine with five pars and four birdies, making the turn at 1-under, one stroke behind Fobes. Jarman and Fobes, both former golfers at UNCW, were battling it out, along with Stiles who remained in the game at even-par through nine.

Through 15 holes with just a few left to play, Fobes and Stiles were tied for the lead at 3-over. With the same scores as one another on holes 16, 17, and 18, Fobes and Stiles were headed to a playoff, starting on hole 18.

“I thought, I’ve been hitting my driver on this hole every time, so I decided to hit driver again,” Fobes shared regarding her thoughts during the playoff.

Fobes hit a great drive down the center of the fairway, chipped it onto the green, and sunk her birdie putt to win on the first playoff hole and secure the title.

This being the first mid-amateur event Fobes has played in since graduating from UNC Wilmington, she shared, “It was fun playing with people who are older than me, because I get to learn from them. It was so great playing with Michelle because she was a Seahawk too, and I loved picking her brain throughout the tournament.”

Regarding what the win means to her, Fobes shared “It feels so good. This being my first mid-amateur event and being the youngest in the field, I know there are some really good players out here, so it felt good to come out with a win.”

Stiles finished in second, and Jarman finished in third place at 5-over for the tournament.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank General Manager Stephen Cryan, Head Golf Professional Zach Martin, Golf Course Superintendent Jason Friedman, and the rest of the staff at Longleaf Golf & Family Club for a fantastic event in Southern Pines, N.C.
