Congratulations to Colby Hutchens of Pinehurst, N.C. on winning the 12th Jimmy Creed Junior Boys’ Invitational at Camden Country Club. Hutchens carded rounds of 69-70-68 to finish at a total of 207, 3-under for the weekend to secure the title.

Round 1 and Round 2 were both conducted on Saturday, with the field playing 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30am.

In Round 1 on Saturday morning, Hutchens played a very consistent round. He birdied holes 3 and 13, recorded 15 pars, and only one bogey to finish at 69, 1-under to kick off the tournament. After Round 1, Davis Petty of Spartanburg, S.C. led the pack with a 67, 3-under, putting Hutchens just two strokes back.

In Round 2 on Saturday afternoon, Hutchens shot even-par, 70, to remain at 1-under after playing 36 holes in just one day. After Round 2, Aston Lee of Charlotte, N.C. was at the top of the leaderboard at 2-under, with Hutchens only one stroke behind him as they headed into the Final Round of 18 holes on Sunday morning.

It was a shotgun start again on Sunday morning at 9:00am to determine who would be crowned this year’s champion. Hutchens started his round strong with a birdie on his first hole. He also birdied hole 5, and with seven pars on the rest of the front nine, he was at 2-under for the day through nine, 3-under total. Dylan Lewis of Wilmington, N.C. sat right behind him at 2-under as they made the turn.

Hutchens dropped another birdie right after the turn on hole 10, and through 12 holes, his lead jumped to four strokes. Hutchens remained four strokes ahead with just a few holes to play, making him more comfortable as he came down the stretch. With pars on 15, 16, 17, and 18, Hutchens remained consistent

Regarding what he did well this weekend, despite tough conditions, Hutchens said, “I just kept the ball in play really well. I didn’t hit it out of bounds, I made up and down from a lot of spots, and I just made a lot of pars which I think is what you have to do out here. It’s a tough course and there’s a lot of wind, so you just need to keep it in play and make putts.”

This is Hutchens’ first CGA championship win, and he secured the trophy by three strokes. “Winning today feels great. I’ve never really done it at this level, so I’m proud of myself. I’ve been putting in a lot of work recently and I think it’s paying off.”

Lewis finished in second place at even-par, and Petty and Dylan Park of Easley, S.C. finished tied for third place at 3-over.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank Matthew McCarley, Head Professional, Nick Price, Course Superintendent, and the rest of the staff at Camden Country Club for a great weekend at the 12th Jimmy Creed Junior Boys’ Invitational.
