NEW LONDON, N.C—In a thrilling finish at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C., Brad Luebchow of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Pennson Badgett of Pilot Mountain, N.C., seized victory at the 18th Carolinas Pro-Junior Championship. Luebchow and Badgett fired a 4-under par 68 to win by one shot over four other teams.
The Carolinas Pro-Junior featured a modified alternate-shot format. Teams played their partner’s tee shots and then proceeded to play alternate shots with the best ball.
The tournament began with a shotgun start in the morning, where Luebchow and Badgett started on the par-4 sixth hole. The pair got off to a fairly decent start, playing their first twelve holes at even-par.
The key to victory today was understanding the firm and fast greens at the Old North State Club. The pair stayed consistent on the greens, rarely missing any approach shots and minimizing bogeys by two-putting.
Once the pair hit the picturesque par-5 18th hole, their entire round changed. Luebchow and Badgett fired off three straight birdies on the 18th, 1st, and 2nd holes. Then they added the winning birdie on the very difficult par-5 fourth hole. This birdie set the pair apart from a large group of teams that finished in second place at three-under par.
This was the first time that Luebchow and Badgett have participated in the Pro-Junior together, and this win will undoubtedly feel special to them for years to come.
Second-place teams included: Connor Warren of Spruce Pine, N.C. and Bobby Anglin of Mars Hill, N.C. Adam Stephenson and Hank Haselwood of Winston-Salem, N.C. Andy Zachowitz of Statesville, N.C. and Riley Naylor of Mooresville, N.C. Ryan Webb of Wake Forest, N.C. and Simon Hall of Cary, N.C.
This marked the second time the Carolinas Pro-Junior has been held at the Old North State Club, with the first coming in 2010. The CGA would like to thank Old North State’s Director of Golf, Justin Mathers, Head Professional Brandon Turner, and Superintendent Chris Chapman for their help in putting on a great tournament.
