Pearson and Fox Lead Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball

 

GREENSBORO, N.C. (October 5, 2021) -- The Carolinas Golf Association conducted the first round of the 10th Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. on October 5, 2021. The 65 and over Division competed at 6,235 yards (par 36-36--72), while the 70 and over Division competed at 5,778 yards (par 36-36--72).

The duo of James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C. and Steve Fox of Pinehurst, N.C. came out firing on Tuesday, as they grabbed the first round lead of the Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball.

 

The pair raced out to a score of 9-under-par, 63 on their first round, taking full advantage of their scoring opportunities at Forest Oaks Country Club. An early eagle on the par-4 2nd had Pearson and Fox in business, and they did not waver from there. 

 

Back-to-back birdies would follow on the third and fourth allowing them to make the turn towards the back side at 4-under-par. Once on their back nine the good times kept rolling, with birdies being rolled in on 11, 13, 14, 17 and 18 to propel them to a one shot lead going into the final round. 

 

Bob Edens of Columbia, S.C. and Thomas Eberhard of Johns Island, S.C. had an impressive day as well, turning in a scorecard of 8-under-par, 64 to sit one shot back of the lead. 

 

For this dangerous duo they turned in equal efforts of a 4-under-par, 32 on both the front and back nines, and really did some damage from the fourth hole through the 11th. They collected four straight birdies from holes four through seven, before back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11 made it a very strong six birdies in eight holes. Once more the pair dove into the red numbers at the end of their round, finishing with birdies on the 16th and 18th. 

 

To round out the top five, Keith Hiller of Shelby, N.C. and Trip Boinest of Clemmons, N.C. are tied for third at a mark of 7-under-par, 65 alongside the team of Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. and Doug Owens of Albemarle, N.C. Junior Nance of Clarkton, N.C. and Nile Brisson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. also turned in a first round score of 7-under-par, 65. 

 

Parks and Owens are no strangers to success in this event, as they are the defending champions and will be sure to make some noise in the final round tomorrow. 

 

In the 70 and over Division Keith Li and Pete Allen of Southport, N.C. lead the field after a 9-under-par, 63 first round. Jerry Hartsell of Matthews, N.C. and Vardaman Banks of Midland, N.C. are in solo second after a first round 8-under-par, 64, while Jack Marin of Matthews, N.C. and Robert Desjardins of Durham, N.C. round out the top three after an opening 7-under-par, 65.

Forest Oaks Country Club opened in 1962 as an Ellis Maples design. The club played host to the Greater Greensboro Open from 1977 until 2007 and was rated by PGA Tour Members as a favorite stop on the PGA Tour. Davis Love III restored the course in 2002, returning Forest Oaks to glory. 

 

The championship format is 36 holes of four-ball stroke play. Gross scores only. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff.
